Bison Capture 06/08/07

03:49
Well over forty moms and babies are rounded up and herded into the capture facility just north of West Yellowtone, Montana. The word is that the bulls will be sent to slaughter after all and the yearlings (immature bison that were born last year) will be sent to quarantine. Yesterday the bison that were captured before noon sat in horse trailers, tightly confined for some six hours, in a situation that bison have been known to react to very badly in the past, i.e. goring one another. They are, after all, wild animals in tight confines. After six hours, finally, the transport began and they were shipped to the Stephens Creek Capture Facility inside Yellowstone National Park, just outside Gardiner, Montana, instead of shipping them deep inside the park as they originally stated they would. They arrived after dark, when neither the BFC nor the park service would have an easy time examining them for injury. After a couple of days of getting the calves re-accustomed to their mothers in the new setting, they will be "set loose." Are we setting them up for further hazing? Will they seek lower elevations again, in this setting, as they are released in a region they are not used to and one that is far sparser in the vegetation they like so much? In a couple of weeks, after more possible hazing, will they be called unmanageable - and killed? Do these magnificent forces of nature ever wonder why they crawled back from extinction? Was it for this? The Buffalo Field Campaign will continue to document this.

Their Lives are Saved

01:19
For now, the state of Montana and the federal government won't kill these three hundred bison that consist mainly of mamas and calves. It was activism at its best: the superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, Suzanne Lewis, was so inundated with emails letting her know where we all stood on the slaughter that her account shut down. On behalf of the Buffalo Field Campaign, myself, and especially on behalf of the buffalo, I thank you.

These Yellowstone Buffalo Are About to be Killed!

01:33
These newborn bison calves and their families have been sentenced to death. The Montana Board of Livestock decided yesterday to capture and slaughter all Yellowstone bison in Montana, including this herd that we filmed as they frolicked on our National Forest lands. Take a look at this video and then TAKE ACTION, because there is still time to save these bison from Montana's death sentence.

Typical

01:10
After hazing 40+ buffalo a minimum of 7 miles, 3 moms and 2 yearlings break away from being forced into the Duck Creek capture facility. After 30 minutes of relentless attempts to capture the buffalo and being run through both barbed wire and high tension wire fences 10 times, 2 moms escaped back into Yellowstone Park. The last mom and her two yearlings, all cut up and ragged where allowed to return to the Park.

How many gov't officials does it take?

00:35
The hazing operations are exhausting to the buffalo and a waste of taxpayers money. See how many agencies (and helicopter) are involved in hazing this one buffalo. Remember there are no cattle in the West Yellowstone area during winter.

Elk migration near West Yellowstone

00:36
Yellowstone National Park is home to over 100,000 Elk. Like the Bison, Elk migrate to lower elevations to milder winter habitat. This amature video taken near West Yellowstone shows thousands of Elk in migration. The Elk carry brucellosis too. What about the elk infected with brucellosis? Elk hunting is a tremendous source of revenue for the State of Montana and there would be tremendous public outry from outfitters and the hunting public if there were a slaughter of the elk. Slaughtering the buffalo makes no sense when there is always the risk of reinfection from the elk. The real issue is the competition between buffalo and cattle foraging on public-lands. The livestock industry has no interest in sharing these public lands with America's largest free-ranging herd of buffalo.

Bison calves caught in hazing operation

Bison calves only hours old are forced to run for their lives. Some calves die in the hazing operations as they try to keep up with their mothers. Hazing is unnecessary because there are no cattle in the West Yellowstone area.

Hazing operations & the Stephens Creek Capture Facility

01:01
This video is from winter 2004 on the north side of Yellowstone National Park near Gardiner Montana. National Park Service employees haze buffalo into the Stephens Creek capture facility. This video is shocking and probably not appropriate for small children. But it is the reality of today's wild buffalo in Yellowstone.
