Imagine delivering a baby, putting in stitches, or performing a blood transfusion by candle light. This was Kathryn’s reality while volunteering at a Gambian hospital. After witnessing an infant die because an incubator lacked continuous electricity she decided something needed to be done. Upon returning to the United States, Kathryn founded Power Up Gambia with the mission of providing sustainable solar energy to hospitals and clinics in Gambia as well as educating the youth in Pennsylvania and Delaware about renewable energy, African culture, and the importance of giving back. This summer, 72 life-giving solar panels will have been installed in Gambia. www.powerupgambia.org

After witnessing far too many preventable deaths while volunteering in Malian slums, Caitlin transformed her frustration into action by co-founding the Mali Health Organizing Project. Instead of throwing money at a problem, MHOP enables slum neighborhoods to lead their own sustainable health systems. MHOP and the community hold the government accountable to ensure the quality and availability of healthcare. Since its creation, MHOP has reached 8,300 people with programs for health outreach, microfinance, literacy and peer education and will be expanding to 60,000 people this summer. www.malihealth.org

In her memory, he began the Global Micro-Clinic Project, establishing 50 community based "micro-clinics" to serve those most need. At only 8 years old, Savannah was passionate about protecting Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling. When she learned how much gas we waste by driving on under-inflated tires, she knew she had to take action and hopefully save enough gas to protect the Refuge. Her organization, Pump '¿em Up, distributes free tire gauges to increase fuel efficiency, saving the average person hundreds of dollars. She also helps people across the country host events in their own communities to fight global warming through gas conservation. Savannah worked with UNC Charlotte to install a Pump 'em Up free air station and is expanding her program to install stations at other campuses and organizations.
