Jackson 5 Got to Be There/Brand New Thing Hellzapoppin. 1972

04:44
Jackson began his musical career at the age of seven as the lead singer of The Jackson 5 and released his first solo recording, Got to Be There in 1971, while remaining a member of the group.[2] He began a full-fledged solo career in 1979 and formally parted with his siblings in 1984.[3] Talk about an anointed voice...he tore this up

James Brown Popcorn

04:14
After that, all bets were off. Brown had a huge revue he traveled with; there was always a woman singer, whose job was to sing backup, warm up the crowd (usually with a short set that ended with "People"), and generally do the diva thing. In the fall of 1969, that was Vicki Anderson (the wife of Brown's longtime right-hand-man Bobby Byrd). In an attempt to cover the potentially lucrative answer-song market, he assigned her "Answer To Mother Popcorn (I Got a Mother For You)," and she co-wrote and sang the living hell out of it. It came out in September, and it wasn't a hit, but it's become a collectors' favorite, with an amazing screaming-diva vocal and a magnificently tense groove. Maceo Parker and his brother, Melvin Parker, joined James Brown in 1964; In his book Brown says that he originally wanted Melvin as his drummer but agreed to take Maceo under his wing as part of the deal. Maceo, Melvin and a few of Brown's band members left to found Maceo & All the Kings Men which toured for two years. In 1973 Maceo returned to James Brown's band. In 1975 Maceo and some of Brown's band members, including Fred Wesley, left to join George Clinton's Parliament.

James Brown Live On the Midnight Special The Payback

07:20
The Payback was apparently written to be the soundtrack for Hell Up In Harlem (hence us stocking it) but was rejected by director Larry Cohen for "not being James Brown enough". James Brown decided to release the material as The Payback - and good job too. Like everything about James, this is another song that has been sampled by other artist. If you know your music, I didn't have to say that huh? lol

James Brown Sex Machine / Soul Power

04:40
A great little album by The Godfather -- one that takes the core James Brown sound of the "Sex Machine" generation, and serves it up with a tighter mid 70s twist! Fred Wesley is still very firmly at the helm of the band -- and there's a power here that's equal to the later JBs work on the Breakin Bread album. The grooves are nicely free of the "fast funk" syndrome that crept into James' work a few years later as his answer to disco -- and are super tight all the way through!

James Brown The Original Dancemaster

03:37
"James presented obviously the best grooves," rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy once told The Associated Press. "To this day, there has been no one near as funky. No one's coming even close." Brown also left his mark on numerous other musical genres, including rock, jazz, reggae, disco, dance and electronic music. And the pompadoured, flamboyant Brown also influenced many artists with his dancing. His often copied, never quite equalled, rapid-fire footwork inspired such artists as Michael Jackson, Prince and Mick Jagger.

The Jacksons Feb. 1979 Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground) pt 2

03:46
After two LPs produced by Gamble and Huff, the Jackson wanted artistic control, and produced their next LP, 1978's Destiny, on their own. The album included the Jacksons' biggest post-Motown single, "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", which charted at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number three on the Billboard R&B Singles chart. "Shake Your Body", written by Michael and Randy, sold over two million copies, attaining double-platinum status. Destiny also went platinum, and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200 album chart and number three on the R&B album charts. In 1980, the Jacksons received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Evelyn "Champagne" King- Out of Control 1984

03:37
Evelyn "Champagne" King (nicknamed Bubbles as a baby because she blew saliva bubbles and later adopted the similarly themed nickname "Champagne").On the heels of 1983's artistically and commercially disappointing "Face To Face," King served up a much more consistent follow-up with her seventh album. From the onset of the set's vivacious opener, "Show Me (Don't Tell Me)" - with a lyrical context notably similar to 1983's "Action," "So Romantic" allows King plenty of room to showcase her flair for dance music without overcrowding her with excessive electronic gimmicks. It does an impressive job of melding dancefloor beats with rock guitars and keyboards - a vein in which the singer is very at home. Whether it be the intelligently produced 12" single "Just For The Night," boasting an understated echo-chamber effect that is concentrated in the background; the straightforward and soulful "Give Me One Reason" (one of the set's most melodic tunes, along with the emotive "Till Midnight"); or the nocturnal rocker "I'm So Romantic," or the funky 12" single "Out Of Control," the overall sound is very solid with an adept mixture of live instrumentation and synthesizers. With King's bold vocals atop them, the songs on "So Romantic" make it a worthwhile album.

The final section of Stay With Me later became one of the most famous samples in hip-hop and R&B, with Big L (MVP), The Notorious B.I.G. (One More Chance [Remix]), Mary J. Blige (Don't Go), and Ashanti (Foolish) all making use of the sample for their own hit singles.

Janet Jackson- Say You Do 1982

03:48
At the age of 16, Janet released her debut album, Janet Jackson (1982), though the teenager protested that her last name should not have been on the cover. Produced by soul singers Angela Winbush, Rene Moore and Leon Sylvers of the famed Sylvers family music group, the album reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B album charts. The album spent 45 weeks in the chart's top 50 but was much less successful on the Billboard pop albums chart. The album yielded three singles: Young Love, Say You Do and Come Give Your Love to Me. The album Janet Jackson sold more than 250,000 copies at the time of its release
