Wal - Still of the Night (Whitesnake) - 18/11/09

I love this one. John Sykes is a guitar hero of mine & this is my favourite Whitesnake track. Scream4vengeance & Asphyx123 have a collaboration cover on YouTube that rocks & watching it proved too much temptation & I had to have a go. I've been put off by the solo before - and the lack of decent tab, but I found a Guitar Pro version that was a starting point & got the solo from a YouTube lesson by Samhillband. The backing is courtesy of a Whitesnake Demo posted by Purplesnakesite - and for some reason there's no solo on that version. Not that you'd notice with all the huge '80's hair, tight trousers, posing & pouting in the video. That was just the band - the model had big hair & pouted as well. My version is a bit hesitatnt as usual - I don't really allow enough time to let the track "bed in" in the ancient memory. The solo has a few dead notes - the lack of fret markers on the PC1 always throws me, although I doubt I'd get it "just so" on any of my guitars. So, the usual "draft version" gets posted again.........

Duality (Slipknot) - 15/11/09

04:12
Why not. No awkward solos, and I had the copy of Guitar World just sitting begging to be opened on the tab pages. Bloody awkward riffs though. Nice & low, so watch those bowels. I think I managed some of the "squealies" on the 3rd string ok (tuned B, F#, B, E, G#, C#), but the 1st string ones don't pop out much. Hey ho. I'm not very high in the mix so you can hear the Slipknot boys in the background making my squeals sound a bit lame ("Squeal like a pig, boy") & the riffs are mainly muted - but I'm in there somewhere. And, typically, I was celebrating getting a reasonable take & completely forgot the last bar in a major brain-fart moment. I can't edit video, so I'm relying on you to ignore that bit - ok?

Whiskey in the Jar (Thin Lizzy) - 14/11/09

More Lizzy! I'm digging deep into my tab archives now. And for the younger folk out there, yes, Thin Lizzy did it before Metallica.......

Man in the Box (Alice in Chains) - 12/11/09

04:47
More Alice - I had the tab, but I had to buy the album to get a backing track. Dedication, eh? I haven't listened to much Alice in Chains, although I did see them at Download a couple of years ago, but what I've heard so far is pretty cool! I should be using a talk box - but I've settled with the Boss Auto Wah set on "Humanizer" & got a semi decent tone with a bit of fiddling. I fiddled with the auto wah as well. This one took about an hour & was done in one take. Noice.

Cult of Personality (Living Colour) - 08/11/09

04:07
Back to Guitar Hero tracks! The tab turned up recently & we had a copy of what may be the radio edit of the track. I've used this as backing. Sadly, a lot of the really tricky second guitar solo has been cut out in the CD edit. Gosh darn it. And I always so look forward to real finger-mangling solos. It made the whole thing quicker to learn though. The usual "don't know the track well enough" hesitations in the solos & one annoying one in the outro just after the backing fades. But ok for a couple of hours' effort. The tone is a bit scratchy - trying to get the original's approximate tone. Vernon Reid did a demo in this month's Guitar World & his tone was worse, so, you know, whatever.

Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult) - 05/11/09

05:08
Go on, tell me the hairs didn't stand up on the back of your neck when you heard the main riff. They didn't? You must have alopecia. That's like Aloe Vera, but much less succulent. Don't Fear was the intro to the mini series of The Stand (Steven King) - played across a backdrop of people dropping like flies from a virus. Made me shiver, anyway. The solo isn't tooooo bad - I don't know it all that well. It suprised me when I listened to the full track - I don't recall ever having heard it. After listening to my version, you may be so traumatised, you won't remember it either..........

She Builds Quick Machines (Velvet Revolver) - 1/11/09

04:04
Another Velvet Revolver track. Off their last album, Libertad. Not a bad album, but this is the standout track on it, in my opinion. Easy enough, until the solo. Very similar to Dirty Little Thing, where the solo sounded easy, but ripped along. This one is at the boundary of my finger speed & one of the quick flurries is a bit messy - but in general, not too bad.... Bloody hurt my fingers practising the solo again - no more Slash tracks for a while!

Vermillion (Slipknot) - 23/10/09

05:18
Another low tuned one, so another outing for the baritone......... This one was ok, although I'm not too sure about the accuracy of the solo. The only problems were switching the bloody wah on & off, as usual, & having a cough meant my gimp mask felt a bit restrictive.

No One Knows (QOTSA) - 19/10/09

04:21
It was this or Peace Sells by Megadeth - and that one has three fast solos in it & I've got a cold and all sorts of other excuses.

The Boys Are Back In Town (Thin Lizzy) - 16/10/09

04:47
Can't believe I hadn't done this one before. Not complex, but a great track. Nice to play the strat as well - the lower output pickups actually suit this style pretty well. Many, many years ago, when chavs didn't exist & if someone was being an arse you could sort him out without fear of legal reprisal, I used to get back to my home town from university at breaks, meet my mates down the pub on a Friday night, stick this track on the jukebox in our favourite pub at the time & get shit-faced. Good times. That was before getting pissed at the weekend became "binge drinking" & they banned the sale of "snakebite" (much of which I admit I left, partially digested, in drains & alleyways around my hometown along with chip remnants, pizza fragments, burger grease & the ubiquitous tomato skins & carrot pieces. Bad times). Then do the same on Saturday. Good times again. Anyway, enough nostalgia. It's Friday.................

Emerald (Thin Lizzy) - 14/10/09

04:07
Do any ladies out there have any Irish in them? Do you want some? Classic. Not a fast solo - but like the tab said, if playing it as a solo player rather than a duo, it's relentless.

Rocks (Primal Scream) - 11/10/09

03:51
Great track, although mostly traditional rock rhythm rather than face-melting metal lead breaks. I think the backing could do with being a bit louder so you can hear the screaming harmonica solo at the end. The solo could do with a boost as well, but the pedals I was trying to use just didn't sound right.

Pride (Damageplan) - 10/10/09

04:21
Dimebag's band after Pantera. I haven't got the album yet, so the only version I've heard is the Total Guitar track & backing. This is a reasonable (I hope) attempt at that. Not enough effects on the clean sound - switching them for the distorted sound would have been too much tap dancing. As it is the solo has wah - I'll have to get one with more sweep & an easier "on" button - see the twist & stamp. A bit has some whammy harmonies. A few dead notes, missed harmonics - ah, you're used to all this now, eh?

Hysteria (Muse) - 07/10/09

03:49
Muse when they were still good (a bit harsh - there's a couple of decent tracks on the latest album, but the rest are pretentious piffle). The next in my "second stream" of unplayed tab - not alphabetic, but only because there were two tracks I wanted to have a go at in the one magazine & I was too lazy to dig out any more... It's a bit dim - I forgot to lighten the PC screen to brighten things up a bit. I started using a Whammy pedal on the "octave down" setting & got some pretty cool sounds - but it interferred with the bass on the backing, so I didn't bother with it in the end. As usual, I got to the point I thought I'd try a recording & then move on to another track, so this one has a couple of missing notes - at the end of the rhythm & the start of the solo, so it goes a bit quiet..... Couldn't be arsed to record another attempt, so I, and you, will have to lump it.....

Them Bones (Alice in Chains) - 04/10/09

02:32
Started trawling my collection of guitar mags for stuff I hadn't already tried & that I might enjoy playing. This was under "A", so it got done first..... Haven't really heard much Alice, although did see them live at Download a couple of years ago. I might invest in some old stuff & the new album, just to give it a try. Not complex - but I do like the solo. This took just under a couple of hours, including finding my phaser, setting it up & killing a few Klingons. They were on the starboard bow.

Broken, Beat & Scarred (Metallica) - 03/10/09

06:25
Close enough. I started on this, this morning & although the order of things is almost stuck in my head I don't know the song well enough & get a bit hesitant near the end. The solo - like the last Metallica one I did, Kirk's solo... is a shite mish mash of bits & pieces. He's a bit quicker than I am, so mine's slightly more shite - but I don't get paid for it.

Blackbird (Alter Bridge) - 30/09/09

07:57
Recorded as a draft, but it came out ok. Out of my comfort zone - the clean sections are fingerpicked & I can only fingerpick noses. I've tried to hybrid pick - using the plectrum & one other finger & it works to an extent. I hadn't tried this one earlier as the fingerpicking put me off a bit, but the fast section of the solo put me off a bit more. Turns out that the key to fast sounding solos is pedal tones + fast wah. It sounds like it worked ok to my untutored ear, so this version will do. The levels were a bit tricky - I think what you're hearing is mainly me, backed by Tremonti's guitar, but I don't think the tone is quite right - it's a bit bassy, especially at the bridge section. But hey ho......

Get Out The Door (Velvet Revolver) - 22/09/09

03:16
Nice 'n' easy - if not at all well played then at least quick to learn. The solo needs a talkbox, but I used an autowah on "humanizer". The tone's a bit crap, but there you go.... There's a flanger on there as well, plus the tone I was using on GearBox had reverb, delay & a touch of chorus. If I could have fitted more in, I would have.....

Dead Memories (Slipknot) - 20/09/09

04:29
Why not. Again, tab was recently popped through my door & it was this or Velvet Revolver - that one may be next. If it sounds bassy, that's because it is. The tuning was BEADF#B & normal gauge strings just hang off guitars with this low a tuning. So I broke out the trusty George Lynch baritone for more fret confusion. Mostly ok - some hesitation & missed notes due to lack of positional sense on the inlaid neck, a lack of knowledge of the track (for some reason I don't have this album...yet) & a lack of general skill. The solo is ok - I was so nervous about the quick flurry of legato notes that I fluffed the first string bend. Better than fluffing John Holmes I guess. Especially as he's dead. Anyhoo.........

Song for Love (Extreme) - 19/09/09

05:53
Another "power ballad" for the ladies, as the tab had popped through the door with the Boston one. The usual dead notes, missed harmonics & slight mistimings, but nothing that makes me want to cry. Much. I've played the solo better, I've played the clean sections better, but I'm buggered if I could get the whole lot as I'd have liked it. On my best attempt earlier today, I finished only to find the camera battery had flattened about 30 seconds before the end. Super, smashing, lovely. I couldn't get the tone right - I wanted it nice & "middy" for the solo, but needed something bassier for the clean sections. I went somewhere in the middle & got the rather scratchy sound you can hear. Hey ho. It's my fault for giving the hired help the day off so I couldn't work my wall of Marshalls & Mesa Boogies & their effects loops. I've just listened to the original - I think Nuno uses much more gain than I do, but the guitar part is under all the singing & not really that obvious. Something a bit heavier next time I think.
