How Long

02:36
The Rockets Live @ Harrah's Tahoe 1997. Jhan, Mark and I open up most every show with this great one hit wonder by Ace which had the great voice of Paul Carrack. Many listeners believed that this was a love song. The truth is that is was about bass player Terry Comer working with other bands (he played briefly with The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver before returning to Ace). He didn't tell the members of Ace and they felt cheated. Paul Carrack was the lead singer of Ace. He went on to sing for Squeeze and Mike And The Mechanics and had a solo hit with "Don't Shed a Tear." This was Ace's only hit. They broke up in 1977. The bass introduction is borrowed from "Traveling Song" by the British folk rock group Pentangle.

Steppenwolf

07:07
Louie Fontaine and the Rockets Live @ Harrah's Tahoe 1997. Just us doin our thang...rockin out. Ironicly Mark now works with the bass player and lead guitarist that recorded and were members of Steppenwolf on the original version of these timeless hits. We all met when we opened up for them, now pesenting themselves as "The World Classic Rockers", in Reno at the infamous Hot August Nights outside at the Flamingo Hilton. One of our annual regular gigs along with Reno's "Streets of Thunder" biker rally and the Lauglin River Run Biker rally.

Louie Fontaine and the Rockets Live @ Harrah's Tahoe 1997. We all loved The Beatles, finding songs that fit Louie was a challenge and that we could do justice to and still sleep at night, well I still can't sleep at night....but that's another story, eh?

Hocus Pocus

03:25
Louie Fontaine and the Rockets Live June 12, 1997 @ the Rainbow Casino, Wendover Nevada. "Hocus Pocus" is a 1971 song from Moving Waves, the second album by Dutch rock group Focus. It was written by guitarist Jan Akkerman and flautist/keyboardist Thijs van Leer. It was also released as a single with Janis as a B-side for the UK and Hocus Pocus II for the US. There are no lyrics to the song. It takes the form of a rondo, consisting of alternation between a powerful rock chord riff and varied solo "verses" (in the original all performed by Thijs van Leer) which include yodeling, organ playing, accordion, gibberish lyrics, flute riffs and whistling. Focus recorded a special, faster radio version, which became a hit song. When performing live, the group would play the song even faster. Hocus Pocus reached #20 in the UK and #9 in the US during the spring of 1973. The final bars of the song are used as the outro music on the second series of the BBC TV sitcom Saxondale. Several sections of Hocus Pocus, including the yodeling, falsetto, gibberish lyrics, and rock guitar riff sections, are used in McDonald's television commercials that explicitly point viewers to linerider.com. Addittionally please visit my Blog for more indepth info, letters and to see FOCUS LIVE back in the day....a must view and please leave some comments ;-)!

Frankenstein

03:24
The Rockets Live June 12, 1997 @ the Rainbow Casino, Wendover Nevada. This is one of the most famous instrumental Rock songs. It got its title because of the intense editing that went into the song; it became a monster when it was pieced together in the studio. Says Winter: "When we were editing it in the studio, back in those days when you edited something, you physically had to cut the tape and splice it back together, so it was all over the control room, draped over the backs of chairs and the couch. We were making fun of it, trying to figure out how to put it back together, saying 'Here's the main body; the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone ... ' Then Chuck Ruff, my drummer, says, 'Wow, man, it's like Frankenstein.' As soon as I heard that, I went, 'Wow, that's it!' The monster was born." This was edited down to a manageable single in a long, arduous process. Edgar had band members perform over and over in an attempt to get it right. This wasn't supposed to be the single. It was originally released as the B-side of a song called "Hangin' Around." The sides were flipped when disc jockeys realized this was the hit. Winter's band used to be called White Trash. By the time this was released, they were known as The Edgar Winter Group. Rick Derringer produced this and played guitar on the track along with Ronnie Montrose. A member of The McCoys in the 1960s, Derringer had a hit on his own with "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" in 1974. The group They Might Be Giants frequently does a bizarre cover version as their encore. This was the first hit song that used a synthesizer as the lead instrument. The single sold over 1 million copies and became a classic rock staple. The group originally called this "Double Drum Solo."<BR> Letters:<BR> We must be from the same musical realm. I actally was playing that with the ARP 2600 keyboard like Edgar. And that thing was a nightmare to set up and keep the ocilators synced. And monophonic! WOW! Happy Gobble, Gobble! Woody<BR>
