With elements of comedy, fantasy, horror and romance, this enigmatic and intriguing drama by Hunt Hoe might stand as a cautionary tale to those obsessed with food and love.
Gus (David LaHaye) is a confident and successful Montreal
chef. When a patron suddenly dies in the restaurant and it looks like it could be a poisoning, he is sent off to southern Thailand to learn the Zen of cooking. On the beach of an island paradise he meets Lek (Napakpapha Nakprasitte), a young woman who promises to make him the best Thai chef in Montreal. A romantic relationship soon develops, but it becomes unclear if Gus is a lover, student or prisoner.
Heeding the words of a young boy who regularly appears to
warn Gus to go home, he flees and ends up under the care of a guru (Dr. Mohan Agashe) who promises to show him the way to enlightenment.
Having recovered from his encounter with Lek, Gus heads home to Montreal where he
quickly falls under the spell of Rose (Leah Pinsent), a woman with an uncontrollable appetite.
Consistently compelling visuals make this a riveting cinematic rollercoaster ride into the world of food, love and spiritual mysteries.
David LaHaye gives a powerful performance as Gus, and Leah Pinsent finds the perfect balance between beauty and repulsiveness for her character.
