Cheburashka and Crocodile Gena

05:00
This is a short clip from a Soviet cartoon called Cheburashka i Krokodil Gena. Cheburashka (Russian: Чебурашка) is a character of children's literature from a 1965 story by the Russian writer Eduard Uspensky. He is also the hero (voiced by Klara Rumyanova) of the animated film series by Soyuzmultfilm studio, the first episode of which was made in 1969. Cheburashka is a funny little animal, unknown to science, who lived in the tropical forest. He accidentally got into a crate of oranges, ate his fill and fell asleep. Cheburashka is not a personal name; it is a species name invented by the puzzled director of the shop, where he was found. The salesmen took the animal out and sat him on the table, but his paws were numb after the long time spent in the crate and he tumbled down ("cheburakhnulsya" (чебурахнулся), a Russian colloquialism, "tumbled" in English) from the table onto the chair and from the chair, where he could not sit for the same reason, onto the floor. The director of the shop, who saw it, called him Cheburashka. The words with this root were obsolete in Russian; Uspensky gave them a new life. (The classic Explanatory Dictionary of the Live Great Russian language of Vladimir Dahl gives the meaning of "cheburashka" as another name for "Vanka-Vstanka" tumbler toy.) Cheburashka has a bear-like body and large round ears and is about the size of a 5-year old child. The gender of the creature is most likely male. In the tale, he hangs around with a friendly crocodile Gena, who wears a hat and a coat, walks on his hind legs and plays an accordion. He works in a zoo as a Crocodile. Gena's favorite songs are "Birthdays happen only once a year" and "Blue Wagon".

The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish

30:11
(Russian: Сказка о рыбаке и рыбке) based on an 1835 poem by Aleksandr Pushkin. The tale tells about a fisherman who managed to catch the Golden Fish which promised to fulfil any his wish in exchange for letting it go. In Pushkin's poem, an old man and woman have been living poorly for many years. They have a small hut, and every day the man goes out to fish. One day, he throws in his net and pulls out seaweed two times in succession, but on the third time he pulls out a golden fish. The fish pleads for its life, promising any wish in return. However, the old man does not want anything, and lets the fish go. When he returns and tells his wife about the golden fish, she gets angry and tells her husband to go ask the fish for a new washboard (their washboard is broken), and the fish happily grants this small request. The next day, the wife asks for a new house, and the fish grants this also. Then, in succession, the wife asks for a new palace, to become the ruler of her province, to become the tsarina, and finally to become the Ruler of Sea, to subjugate the golden fish completely to her boundless will. As the man goes to ask for each item, the sea becomes more and more stormy, until the last request, where the man can hardly hear himself think. When he asks that his wife be made the Ruler of the Sea, the fish cures her greed by putting her back in the old cottage and giving back the broken washboard. The moral of the story is: do not get too greedy, or you will end up with nothing. SKAZKA O RYBAKE I RYBKE╩ (animated film) 31 min. 54 sec. SOYUZMULTFILM, 1950 On the motives of Pushkin's fairy tale. Hedgehog in the Fog, Ёжиквтума́нене

09:56
Hedgehog in the Fog (Russian: Ёжик в туманене, Yozhik v tumane) is a 1975 Soviet animated film directed by Yuriy Norshteyn, produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow. The script (in Russian) was written by Sergei Grigoryevich Kozlov, who also published a book under the same name. This is a story about a little hedgehog (voiced by Mariya Vinogradova) and his friend bear cub (voiced by Vyacheslav Nevinniy). They would meet every evening to drink tea, count the stars and have conversations. One day, as usual, the hedgehog decided to bring raspberry marmalade. As he went to the bear to count the stars, he was already thinking what to talk about. While passing through the woods on the way to his friend, the hedgehog finds a horse standing in a fog. He is curious as to whether the horse would suffocate if it lay down in the fog. Being an explorer, the hedgehog decides to explore the fog. He finds himself in a strange world inhabited by many frightening creatures (eagle-owl and the bat) but also helpful and kind ones (the dog and the fish); that world of silence and rustles, of darkness, high grass and attracting enchanting stars. He hears the sound of the owl. He is so frightened that it seems to him that the owl is very close. He is frightened, but his curiosity keeps him exploring the unknown. The characters of Hedgehog and Bear cub are very kind and friendly. In contrast, the eagle-owl is very hostile, being on the hunt and not taking care of the beauty of the surrounding world.
