Meet Captain Mike Manazir who tells us to ask any question, take pictures and videos, talk to the sailors, no restrictions. Right away with the Captain you will get a feeling for the people on board. One of my fellow travelers, Olwen Huxley, summed it up perfectly: "I got on the Nimitz "wow, the technology" and got off the Nimitz "wow, the people." Distributed by Tubemogul.
Who knew after all my disco years dancing to the tune of "in the navy" I would be a DV on a US Navy Aircraft Carrier? Shane and I spent an overnight on the USS Nimitz - a 4.5 acre steel beach. We've got several episodes for you, as of course we couldn't go alone! Part One is the getting there, via a COD flight with an arrested landing. Distributed by Tubemogul.
It's been a long time since we've been out on the water together. Our friends Eric, Stacey, and Kaile got a new 4-man outrigger canoe. Shane, Eric, and I took it out - saving a seat for you! I have missed being on the water, and hope you enjoy this episode - oh so Hawaii. Huli means to roll over in Hawaiian, and though we caught several awesome waves, we also caught a 360! It was a great day, made better in my memory by the amazing song, "The Ocean" by Barefoot Truth. Please follow that link to iTunes and purchase a copy in support of them. Mahalo to MadGringo for sending us box of t-shirts and tops - Eric said of his, "This is the coolest shirt ever!" Distributed by Tubemogul.
I went on a 5-day silent intensive with Lola Jones a few weeks ago. For me it was pure heaven. I have in the past done 24 hours of silence on my birthday, and loved the clarity I experienced. To be able to ignore all others and go within myself for listening, for sharing, for counsel, was very powerful. There is a lot of noise, especially in my work on the social web (twitter, etc) And much as I love it, I was yearning to talk to the divine, to God directly. I can say that the moment we dropped into silence, having prepared for over 2 weeks, my mind came alive with conversation and insight, as if I were seeing my wise best friend after a very long absence. Curiously enough, I still became quite close to the others on the retreat. We shared the energy of this experience - far more powerful than sharing words, which fail me so much of the time. There was more to this retreat that I will talk about later. For now, I offer up silence as a way to connect with your #1 - your large self, the divine you. And then you become such a gift to others. Roz is one of those people you meet who is unforgettable. She has rowed solo across the Atlantic, and is now one-third of the way across the Pacific. She has been featured as a top adventurer by Outside Magazine. She recently met Al Gore as part of her mission is to help us wake up to the incredible pollution in the oceans among other environmental causes. She departs from Hawaii at sunset on Sunday May 24th, and is having a local fundraiser at the ING DIRECT Cafe this Friday, May 22nd. Please come and support Roz, or make a contribution on her web site. Meet her in person - she is doing so many things so well - adventure, inspiration, technology - the list is endless. You can also buy ethically sourced merchandise from her online store. Please do visit her site - it is filled with photos, ideas, inspiration, and details of here extraordinary existence here on Planet Earth. A few weeks ago I talked about updating the database. And there is a tricky second aspect of that. If you are updating an old version of the database, then you miss out on stuff! This happens, sadly, all the time when more than one person has access to a master database. They work "locally, make a bunch of changes, and everything looks cool. But if they don't connect and send their updates to the main source, then everyone else who uses it is missing something. Or sometimes the db gets moved, and you didn't know, so you are syncing with an old version. Each of us is also an author of the master database - in addition to noticing others' changes we get to add our own! Voila - we end up with being able to "create our own reality." As I have said many times before, "you meet the coolest people on the beach in Hawaiʻi!" Today we met Chris SantaCroce, aka Uber Shaman. It was his birthday, and he was starting the day at the beach with his puppies. He is a renaissance man - doing a number of things with his talents, and in a beach walks kind of way, spreading cheer and consciousness and geekiness to those he meets! To him, I was "that lady who walks the beach?" Yes, whenever I can! Distributed by Tubemogul.
Updating my database: servers do it automatically every few minutes in some cases- the Internet is so smart, it knows we are constantly changing! One of the things I am changing is feeling under-appreciated. I had this awareness that I get my satisfaction and pleasure from what I am doing in the moment. Yet I too often have front-loaded and back-loaded things with expectations. They impact the energy and the experience itself. I am choosing to give up that habit as I am a pleasure seeking person! I have re-purposed the pity pot I used to have into a compost bin where my "I am done with that" thoughts go to be reconfigured. Now I ask myself, “Rox, are things being done to you or for you?” This changes the energy in a heart beat. (Because I understand now it's all for me. And it's all good.) Distributed by Tubemogul.
I've been conducting a very lackadaisical campaign on Beach Walks over the past three years to change attitudes about bikinis aka the Bikini Liberation Front. We mostly approach them from the point of view of bikini watchers, not bikini wearers. It is so loaded with who should or should not wear one. Well here in Hawaii they are ubiquitous! No matter what kine body you have - it just feels good to have the warm water of the Pacific and the warm sunshine wash over you. Wayne Dyer once said something very apropos here: "What you think of me is none of my business." So if you find yourself wanting to wear a bikini this summer, it just may be that all that needs to get in shape is your mind! Distributed by Tubemogul.
Our car is 6.5 yrs old but has only 40,000 miles (eh - living on an island!) I have way more miles in my frequent flier accounts than the odometer of the Ford Escape. Statistics can prove anything. Old Thinking: That’s bad! New Thinking: Use math to my advantage, to help me feel better, so I become untethered to what is holding me back. Not to lie or manipulate per se, but to use .5 as half full, OR half empty. Both are true. Which interpretation feels better for me for now? I personally value emptiness as much as fullness - it all depends on the situation. Distributed by Tubemogul.
I love reiterating some of our recurring human experiences with the goal of going easier on ourselves. This episode is a reminder of how stressful it can sometimes be to learn new things, as in the case of my nephew Tyler who is learning to drive. Remember that the brain and quite possibly also the physical circuitry is at work learning new patterns. To realize that some old patterns may be in the process of expanding or being dismantled. And to go slower rather than faster. To repeat as often as needed. To expect delays and lurches forward too! Distributed by Tubemogul.
One of the things that is becoming well understood these days is how no one knows everything and how we can really benefit from providing energetic support to each other. One way this plays out, is in how the Beach Walks philosophy has contributed to a new book by Ian Sanders, Juggle! Rethink work, reclaim your life. Now, I have the luxury of seeing some of the ideas I've pondered put onto the page, co-mingled with several great minds! And the opportunity is to continue reflecting and putting more of it into practice - taking ideas into action. In this episode I talk about Chapter 7 - Get Unplugged. Taking time off from the treadmill of life's ingrained habits and automatic assumptions is a powerful juggler's tip. I am learning from Ian who has transformed his own life. I am hoping my walk catches up with my talk this year. Distributed by Tubemogul.
Kaile is a regular visitor on Beach Walks, and she always brings a smile. Her dad Eric has been teaching her all about Hawaiian water sports, and so far she loves them all! In this episode, she paddles a 20' long one man outrigger canoe by herself, then hops on the back to head out to Flat Island and do some canoe surfing, with her awesome Dad, Eric. You can see more of his amazing videos at www.funhogs1.com. We've got great music too, by Creamy.dk, a girl band from Denmark, "Help I'm a Fish". Visit their MySpace page. We found them on the Podsafe Music Network. Distributed by Tubemogul.
Lumiere is a film tradition involving a fixed camera, no editing whatsoever, and typically even no sound. I left the sound in though as I love hearing the waves. Scroll down to the bottom of any page to see a list of all the categories. I love this style especially at the beach - somehow the magic of a minute can capture the serenity, the solitude, the vastness of the ocean, the playfulness of children - all without any words or planning at all. I am practicing getting out of the way, and letting grace happen. Even Lexi stayed off camera for all but a few frames. Distributed by Tubemogul.
Binary refers to how computers work: things basically boil down to ones and zeros. It makes for a very black and white appearance. Yet I am meeting more and more geeky guys who have an artful and spiritual side which I consider the opposite of 1-0. There are so many examples in life where drilled down deep or taken out wide, they become the opposite of themselves. You can check out the video on Byteful.com. Distributed by Tubemogul.
We watched an episode of The Iconoclasts last night with surfer Laird Hamilton and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder. Both are celebrities of course, and they also are living their true natures, deeply and truly. What if permission isn't required to be yourself? What if the part of us we think is the broken or odd part is actually the truest part? Food for thought for Monday. Distributed by Tubemogul.
This episode was filmed last Friday - what a perfect way to start a week! My friend Eric got some new Hero cameras and mounted them on his canoe. You get a great range of perspectives, and of course Eric's daughter Kaile, makes an appearance near the end. This is true Hawaiian lifestyle at its best. If you look hard, you'll see Rox in the background too. You can check out Eric's Pueo canoe here. The music in this episode is from our friend Kaimoku, "Honolulu Shuffle." Distributed by Tubemogul.
I cannot stop watching this episode! It was shot by moi, on the little Sanyo Xacti, there are water drops on the lens, it is a little over-exposed and a lot shaky, and of course I wanted more shots. But there was magic on the beach with Lexi this day. Then I heard this beautiful song on Dave's Lounge #106 and I had to put these ingredients together. Sometimes the energy is so much more than the technique - this is true for me, today. This episode is dedicated to each of you loyal viewers, who so generously receive whatever we share, who shower us with love and affection, who even travel all the way from Canada (and soon from the UK I hope) and share some of your precious vacation time with us. I don't know how to thank the Shanghai Restoration Project featuring Di Johnston for this beautiful song. I already purchased two copies of the album. I hope you will purchase their music to encourage more of this in our world. As for Dave, I have listened to his podcast from the first episode, and he stands in rare company to have been so focused from the start, and he only gets better. Distributed by Tubemogul.
The lumiere film-making tradition means no sound, no editing, no camera movement - and in this case, one minute duration. Enjoy the serendipity! You can read the original show notes and comments here for more in-depth discussion. Distributed by Tubemogul.
thank you Rox!!! I miss you and I love you as well! Can't wait to run into you again. If you're not busy Friday night, I'll be @ Hale'iwa Joe's on Friday the 9th in Kane'ohe up Haiku Road 8-11, love you!!!!
