AUSTIN -- A vandal is targeting local restaurants accusing them of animal cruelty. As FOX 7's Craig Lucie reports, the animal rights activist spray-painted obscenities on at least six restaurants just in the past week.

AUSTIN -- The animal rights group Central Texas Animal Defense is attempting to get local restaurants to remove Foie Gras from their menus. They are now boycotting the restaurants that have refused to remove the dish, which is duck or goose liver. FOX 7's Foti Kallergis reports.

Thursday afternoon, one week after someone vandalized the windows outside Restaurant Jezebel downtown - you could still see the acid marks. The vandal wrote "spit it out" across the front windows. Police say the statement refers to the dish foie gras - which is served at Jezebel. Foie gras is goose or duck liver. The animals are force-fed before slaughter. It's a practice - that draws weekly protests outside Jezebel. Members of the group Central Texas Animal Defense say foie gras is inhumane. "For 3 months we've been harassed - our customers have been harassed," said Parind Vora, Jezebel Owner and Chef. Vora says after his restaurant was hit by vandals in July - he knew he had to fight back. "After the first vandalism, we put up cameras. Some are hidden - some are not. He killed the power to the building hoping it killed the cameras..... but we had battery back-up." Surveillance cameras caught the vandal on camera last week. You can see him writing on the windows outside. Police say he is Joshua Rosenberg. On his myspace.com page he says he fights for human and animal rights. "Unfortunately, they're taking matters into their own hands and damaging property which is not the way to go about it," said APD Detective James Mason. Police say Rosenberg posted pictures of the vandalism on a website registered to him. They also say protestors knew him and identified him as the vandal. "These people threatened my family. They used acid on my windows. All of them are completely destroyed," said Vora. He says he has no problem with demonstrating - but he should not fear for his safety - or that of his family. Rosenberg is charged with criminal mischief. He has not been arrested.

Austin Police say 29-year-old Joshua Rosenberg spray painted the front window of Jezebel in Downtown Austin because they serve foie gras. Rosenberg is not in custody. For months, several Downtown businesses have been targets of animal rights protesters. Police say they're looking for a man "caught in the act" of vandalizing a restaurant. Restaurant Jezebel serves and sells a delicacy called foie gras. It's made from the livers of geese that are force-fed, and that's why people protest -- proclaiming the delicacy the result of a cruel practice. But police say one man took his fight too far, and now he faces a felony charge. "This is him during the protest," an investigator told CBS 42's Gregg Watson. "This is him doing the criminal activity." A protester defaced the building when he or she wrote a warning to diners at Jezebel that read: "Spit it out." It's the second time since July the restaurant has been hit by vandals, upset with them selling foie gras. "They are threatening," says owner Parind Vora. "And not only that, but a lot of our customers have filed complaints with the police department because what they're doing -- they're standing by the door. And as people are trying to walk in, they try to say I'm handing them the pamphlet, but they stretch their arms -- so it's like you're going to 'clothesline' somebody." Vora set up surveillance after the last attack, and police say the suspect's name is Josh Rosenberg. Parind says Rosenberg cut the power, not knowing the camera runs on a back-up battery. "Cutting the power," Vora said. "I mean those are all big deals. This is not something normal people do." The first time Jezebel was targeted, someone posted pictures online. Police say they traced the registered owner of the web site to Rosenberg. "Prior incidents, I guess, have been posted to this web site as well as pictures," says Detective James Mason Austin Police Department. "And the detective was able to use that as a tool during his investigation to place an arrest warrant on the suspect." Despite the damage, meals are still prepared and tables still set. They say dinner will be served, and they hope justice will be too.
