Somewhere Down Above the Skies

11:13
About the film Somewhere Down Above The Skies is a meditation on nature and the vulnerability of being human on Earth. Even the steadiness and reliability of such strong structures as trees are questioned to express the difficulty to find balance in life. It is based on some visual ideas of showing crowns of leafless trees which are visually connected to their roots. My artistic collaborator Nadia Malik had a major role in finding a great dress and improvising relevant movements. The soundtrack based on found music composed by In Vitro. I like the fact the music at some points takes over and becomes a leading force. Somewhere Down Above the Skies (2009) Film Version Running time: 12' Performed by: Nadia Malik Nikolaj Munk Music based on a free mix by In Vitro

Dusk

07:29
In „Dusk” we see a lone female figure emerging from the distance approached by a male holding a camera. The interaction of the two is presented in split-screen so the viewer is able to watch from a distanced, static wieving point and a gradually shifting camera point, attached to the body of the male. As the filmmaker is fully engaged in the camerawork he follows the choreography. From the fixed point of view he becomes part of the content of the film while he doesn’t stop functioning as a filmmaker.

Kariatides

08:36
Single channel projection designed as site-specific for showing at The Crypt, St Pancras Church London. The title refers to the architectural sculptures, the caryatids found on site. Combining recordings of close-ups of the sculptures with shots of a female dancer's improvisation the piece juxtapose movement and stillness between the sculpture and the living. In addition the work is characterized by a different look at the female where the extreme low angle exaggerate the muscular bodies of its female subjects.

A Single Glass of Water Lights Up the World

05:12
This current work continues to explore the interrelation between body, space and movements. A naked female enters the low-key lit studio space and starts a narcissist play with her magnified reflection caused by a mirror a camera and a ground- projection. Using these tools real-time create a complex, extended reality in the studio leaving some clues open to the viewer. The piece has been inspired by Jean Cocteau's “Orphee” (1950).

DAWN

07:54
Running time: 07:54 Format: miniDV choreographed/performed by Jana Jevtovic directed, recorded, edited by Boldi Csernak "Dawn" is the first piece in a split-screen series, which explore the relationship between physicality, psyche and environment/landscape. It was born of a collaboration between a filmmaker and a dancer/choreographer, and primarily motivated by the characteristics of the location itself. We were dealing with an open rural landscape which is path-like: long, narrow and somewhat isloated. With "Dawn" we developed a structure which involved two cameras, one fixed (left screen) and one hand-held (right screen), which in turn allowed us to experiment with a double distance between the camera and the subject. The sensitivity and the mobility of this way of recording allowed for a real-time communication between the performer and the cameraman, who are both continually visible on the left screen. The use of two cameras also resulted in a playing with multiple perspective and point of view. "Dawn" is the introduction to this system. It takes place in a lively automn time, where birds can be heard, people make appearances and the sunrise lighting is continually changing. These factors contribute a certain level of intervention and uncontrollable accident to the event. The movement was not based on a script. Rather, it grew through a process of improvisation which built on to the structure. The performer was strongly affected by the space and its characteristics, and the physicality in the film was a result of this meeting.
