Jesse La Flair - Artarchy

An art performance By artist Jesse La Flair, Artarchy is a mime performance of a continuous wall tagging, the projection of a stop motion film by a hidden projector mimics spray paint markings. As the video is projected, the artist appears to repeatedly write on the wall a red circle encompassing an "A". This symbol normally represents anarchy however in this performance the artist shifts the meaning of the symbol to Artarchy. A symbol which represents the theoretical idea that there is no governing person or body of persons to state what is or isn't art, and that each individual has the absolute liberty to claim if something is, should, isnt or shouldnt be considered art. This performance was included in the 2008 Art In Odd Places: Pedestrian show In New York, NY. Cycle Installation

05:42
Is the time line of life traveled in a linier motion; is there a start and end? Or is life based on patterns and cycles? I feel as though life is a set of parallel circles, moving along like the ripples of a single drop of rain on the surface of a still lake. As the ripples expand to the edges of the lake there is a point where they stop growing and return to their original location. If this drop of water were the only drop to hit this lake, ultimately the waves in which it created would fade and eventually disappear completely. But the still glassy water isn’t just broken by the force of a single droplet, it is blurred by the hectic chaos of everybody’s circles. Some meet at certain points while others never touch, However all are surrounded by circles that will eventually close in on them. My work is meant to spark emotion and commence a silent conversation between the viewer and the work. “Cycle” is a piece that I have been conceptualizing and refining since 2005. The videos deal with the format of life and death in a circular form. “Cycle” includes twelve six inch LCD screens that display only two screens on at a time, the screens that are on are situated directly across from each other (Like the numbers 1 & 7 on a clock). The monitors switch every 22 seconds causing the viewers commitment of interaction with the piece. The piece places the viewer physically and mentally in the center of life and death. The intimate 8 foot circular room allows individuals a chance to meditate on self-awareness and of their position between the two.

Finding Himself In A Thaumatrope

01:12
As time continues we are forced to shape our often different personalities into the shape of one. In this piece A man searches for himself, but is blocked by the space between the video's frames. Only in your mind's eye can he really find himself.

Finding Himself In A Thaumatrope

00:29
A man searches for himself, but is blocked by the space between the video's frames. Only in your mind's eye can he really find himself. Physically the two images of the man are never really together. In this modern day thaumatrope two stop motion films were interlaced frame-by-frame playing with the persistence of vision or the eyes' ability to preserve an image for roughly 1/20 of a second after the picture is removed. So the only time the man can really find himself is in our minds. "Finding Himself In A Thaumatrope" A Stop Motion Film that deals with the science behind a spinning marvel made in the 1820's this object was a disk with two images on it, For example a brid on one side and a cage on the other, when you spun the disk the images became one (a bird in a cage) What I have done is shoot 2 stop motion films in the same location and interlace every picture by switching the two every frame while editing, As the length of the photos get shorter the eye blends the two together.

Me You And Them

00:44
This piece was a reaction to my time in London. Before going to London I had a preconceived idea that the people were going to be much different, like a whole another species. After my time there was up, I realized that we as humans are made up of the same things and go through the same processes in life no matter what location we reside. Included in this piece was a vessel of blood, human urine, and a self portrait, painted with acrylic paint, all contained inside a sealed fish tank under lit with a custom built light box. This piece had to be destroyed because of the true use of materials, followed by a judicial herring with the Dean of Students, in which nothing came out of.

Trust In Uncomfort

00:48
This piece was made to question ones ability in trusting a strangers word and to provoke thoughts of inner emotions when face with an uncommon situation. One camera was placed inside both the men’s and the women’s bathroom, inside of a stall and under each camera a label that said it was a fake camera. Between both rooms sat a monitor that displayed an image of what each camera view would be. (A prerecorded video loop)

View Of Vibrations (Walk)

01:38
View Of Vibrations (Walk) is a two channel sound loop that explores the speaker’s ability to not only generate sound but to come to life as the bass notes hit and create movement in the cones of the speakers that are place face down on the floor. While displayed in a gallery these speakers start off everyday in a straight line along side each other, as the day goes on they tend to run into each other, stray away, come back, and tangle themselves in one another’s wires. It is in these movements that each speaker has been said to have different characteristics and a life of its own.

00:44
View Of Vibrations (Peak) is a one channel sound loop that explores the speaker’s ability to not only generate sound but to come to life. The bass notes from La Flairs loop hit and create movement in the cone of the speaker that is face up hanging From an old light. As the sound loop is played the sound creates the watery like foam to begin to move and come alive, through out the loop the foam spins and creates mountains of visual movement with sound.

Behind Closed Doors

00:33
Curiosity is defined as a strong desire to know or learn something. I found within myself and others, the average person is attracted to the discovery of unknown knowledge or the action of uncovering a secret. A secret is what is not known or seen or not meant to be known or seen by others. In this piece Behind Closed Doors the viewoyeur is drawn closer to the door by the intense light and uncommon sound projecting from the crack beneath the door. Upon further inspection the viewer finds an ambient light coming from an eye hole in the door. As the viewoyeur approaches the door the sound fades as a voice says "Shh quite I think some ones at the door yea some ones there shh" . The noise then fades back in after the person has walked away.

1 Out Of 5

02:00
1 Out Of 5 is a stop motion animated film that abstractly deals with the idea of drugs and the effects on the masses of people who do them. This piece was originally displayed in a full room installation that had up to an inch of white powder in its highest areas and gradually went down from there. It was also originally displayed with a minimal performance by Jesse La Flair himself.
