Join mimoZine and correspondent Alec as we venture out to the middle of nowhere (well, Michigan) to check out the Rothbury Festival. In Part 2, we look specifically into Rothbury's staunch supporting of environmental issues.

Our good friend and occasional hanger-on Vectar the Intolerable was good (evil?) enough to be our correspondent at San Diego Comic Con last year. Step inside the insanity that is SDCC (and Vectar), and meet some interesting people, including Frank Kozik and VinylPulse's Jack Muramatsu.
Michael Franti of Spearhead sat down with us at the 2008 ROTHBURY enviro-music festival to talk about yoga, the environment, music, technology, and his participation at ROTHBURY. Check it to learn more about this musical poet of peace who gets people moving and thinking with his art and actions.
We had the pleasure of spending July 4th weekend with almost 40,000 music fans, musicians like Michael Franti of Spearhead, The Dave Matthews Band, 311, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Theivery Corporation, Kraak and Smaak, The Disco Biscuits, The Crystal Method, amongst dozens of other electronic, indie, and jam bands, and progressive thinkers at the 1st annual Rothbury music festival, a party with a purpose.
Part 3 – Gary explains his creative philosophy, “Pervasive Art,” and he & Sucklord riff on current the world of art and commerce. Adjectives to describe summer: “hot”, “moist”, “sticky.” Adjectives to describe Gary Baseman’s art: “hot”, “moist”, “sticky”, and “Pervasive." To showcase these and other seasonal similarities we sent our favorite Villain Rockstar the Super Sucklord to LA for a little tête-à-tête w/Mimoco’s newest collaborator Gary Baseman at his home and studio. The perversely pervasive painter, toy designer, and two-time Emmy winner talks freely about his diverse successes & unique personal vision. The duo touched on so many things that we had to break it up into separate bite sized nuggets. It’s the “Pervasive Artist” vs. the “Bootleg Artist”. Which one will make it out alive?
Part 2 – Gary takes us on a personal and thorough tour of many of his more prominent series. Part 1 – Sucklord talks to Gary about his career and what makes him sleep well at night. Monster’s aren’t necessarily specific to summer, but the wild creations of artist Stefan Bucher seem to lend themselves to the hot hallucinations of long sunny drives. Although Mr. Bucher is an acclaimed illustrator who has created ambitious work for David Hockney, Tarsem, and Sting, among many others, it is his army of lovable creatures that have brought him notoriety. Starting in November 2006 Stefan began an experiment called the Daily Monster where he filmed himself blowing ink on paper, and using the resulting random blot as a starting point for creating a monster. Over 200 monsters and 2.5 Million views to his site later, this Monster Maker has finally opened his doors and invited mimoZine in for a insightful talk and our very own Monster! Stefan’s art is a new style of performance animation and completely addictive to watch. Look for his hands, ink, and Monsters as regular segments on the New Electric Company reboot premiering January, 2009.
Summer's a time for dancing and if you’re looking for phat beats for your next block party, look no further than Boston’s Big Digits. These guys are here to make you move and have fun, whether you want to or not. Coming out in beautifully dysfunctional fashions and DJ’ing w/WII remotes is what Big Digits do and they do it well. Mixing hip-hop influences with electro, dance, and pop vibes, Big Digits generates enough onstage energy wattage to quickly convert all non-believers. Fresh from winning the Boston Phoenix's Best Rap/Hip-Hop act in the 2008 Best Music Poll and opening for national acts like MIA, Digitalism, and Diplo, Big Digits should definitely be on your “bands to watch” list for 2009.
After a long winter, it’s important to start the new season off right. That’s why we visited with Sat Jivan Singh Khalsa, renowned Kundalini Yogi at his New York City Studio. Kundalini is an ancient Yogic Science with unlimited 21st Century benefits. We're honored to feature this guided meditation perfect for Spring and as Sat Jivan puts it, “New Beginnings.” Next time you’re in NYC, relax your mind with a session at Sat Jivan's studio. Refresh. Enjoy.
The wonders of spring and rebirth inspire us, but so does the truth…even the hard to swallow ones about our Planet. That why’s we’re proud to partner with Vice Magazine and VBS, to bring you the first episode of their new “environmentary” show “Toxic Garbage Island”. Sometimes the truth isn’t always easy, but we here at mimoZine would rather know the truth so that we can at least start dealing with it.
In the world of music what would spring be without SxSW, the annual Independent music festival in Austin? To get a little sonic perspective we had the chance to talk with variety of artists at IODA’s 2008 opening day showcase. We connected with The Wedding Present, Modey Lemon, Andy Davis, Chikita Violenta, Curumin, and DJ Mark Rae of Rae & Christian fame, and now currently one half of Yes King, about their sound, the process, the state of the music industry, and much more.
And what would Spring be without St. Patrick’s Day? But aside from public drunkenness we’re not sure? So we sent mimoZine correspondent the Super Sucklord into the center of the greenzone: the New York St. Patrick’s Day parade 2008 to find out. The full-time toy designer and part-time evil scheming super-villain accepted the dubious mission and vowed to return with fresh insight. Did he succeed? All we’re going to say is that it ain’t easy being green.
There's nothing as refreshing or stimulating as new art. With an eye for finding just that, we sent our crew to the Scope Art Fair in Miami during Art Basel, December 5-9, 2007. Among the seismic multitude of new works that caught our attention, we also discovered the invigorating new voice of Peter Schmitt who draws simultaneous inspiration from Nature, Technology and humanity to create a wholly new vision. Enjoy!
The culture bending art team of Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval are at it again bringing their new spirituality of happiness, luck, and love to the world of MIMOBOT! We caught up with the unassuming duo on the eve of the release of their new line of adorable MIMOBOT characters during Art Basel 2007 to get an inside look at what makes FriendsWithYou so darned friendly!
