10 minute SAMPLE of a documentary Co-Directed by The Downs Brothers......
Synopsis:
Forged from the blood of slaves, the Louisiana State Prison in Angola was built on an old slave-breeding plantation that became the first for-profit prison in the nation after the abolition of slavery. Once considered America's bloodiest penitentiary, Angola underwent a religious makeover in 1995 under the direction of Warden Burl Cain.
From the words "I want to live" shouted by "Bishop" Eugene Tanniehill at a religious rodeo ring call out, "Forgiven" goes behind the prison walls first made famous by the Oscar winning documentary "The Farm." "Forgiven" then chronicles the sometimes heartbreaking stories of inmates serving life sentences for Murder, Rape, Abduction and Armed Robbery and focuses on their tales of redemption.
Several of these prisoners have become ordained ministers during their incarceration, while others have gone through Angola's controversial Christian-based seminary program known as "The Bible College." These Unforgiven have now found their souls calling and want to share their messages of hope, love and forgiveness to help other prisoners hurting behind bars.
The Emmy award winning film director, Alex Downs, teams up with his brother, fine artist and filmmaker, Mac Downs, to focus a secular eye on the religious conversion of inmates behind the bars of this "greatest prison church in the world."
"Forgiven" is set against the incongruous beauty of the Louisiana swamp and the strange college-like dorm setting of this maximum security prison which houses Louisiana's most violent criminals, 85% of which will die behind bars.
In the end "Forgiven" is a call for reform and forgiveness and focuses on the power of compassion-based programs in prison and the effect these programs have on rehabilitating inmates.
