Purdue Log Cabin - John Purdue's family Log Cabin & Descendants

07:57
This video was taken while doing research about John Purdue, founder of Purdue University. It shows one of the log cabins owned by This video was taken while doing research about John Purdue, founder of Purdue University. It shows one of the log cabins owned by the Purdue family in the early 1800s. John Purdue might have stayed here, his niece probably lived here, and John Purdue may have helped build it. The cabin is in its original location, in Blendon Township northeast of Columbus, Ohio. It is approximately 16x22. The Purdue family, of 9 sisters and John, grew up in a one-story log cabin similar to this one in Pennsylvania. Although Purdue University is widely recognized, very little was known about John Purdue. A new book, UNCLE: MY JOURNEY WITH JOHN PURDUE, tells the story of this mysterious man from a desperately poor, illiterate "mountain hollows" family. This book and the videos also document the story of a family's search for its roots. Foreword by Pulitzer Prize-nominated author, William Allen, author of Starkweather: Inside the Mind of a Teenage Killer and other books. Author Irena McCammon Scott is the great-great-grandniece of John Purdue.

AVIATION TO SPACE-- WRIGHT BROS., SR-71, F-22, STEALTH, APOLLO

10:13
From the Wright Brother's airplane to the stealth to the space program, Purdue University is important in aviation. The first Purdue graduate to become an aviator received his flight instruction from Orville Wright himself. Purdue is noted for leading-edge technology. Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, was a consultant for aeronautics and for women’s careers. (Purdue’s Earhart Hall.) In the 1960s and 1970s-the years of the “Space Race,” Purdue University became almost predominate. Graduates ranged from Neil Armstrong, first person to walk on another world, to Eugene Cernan, who was the last. Virgil “Gus” Grissom became one of NASA’s seven original astronauts. (Purdue University’s Grissom Hall.) Over a third of all U.S. manned space flights have had at least one Purdue graduate on board. The F-117 Stealth Fighter (Nighthawk) uses the "F" designation, however, it is chiefly a ground-attack plane sometimes used as a bomber. Because the strength of a radar return is proportional to the edge configuration of an object, the plane has a boxy, aerodynamically unstable appearance. Its stealth technology also includes its surface coating. The GBU-27, a 2200 lb. laser-guided bomb, used in Baghdad, Iraq, was designed specifically for use for it. The SR-71, Blackbird, has a top speed of Mach 3.5 -- more than 3 times the speed of sound (top speed is classified). Maximum altitude is over 100,000 feet. Some think a replacement, the Aurora, is entering service. The T-38, Talon, is an advanced, twin engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet. The Northrop jet is the only supersonic trainer in the world, used by few countries, and was used with the SR-71. Versions are still in use. The B-2, stealth bomber is made by Northrop Grumman. This multi-role heavy bomber can deploy both nuclear and conventional weapons. Paul Tibbets, who died 07.11.01 in Columbus, Ohio, was the US pilot who initiated the age of nuclear warfare when he dropped the atom bomb “Little Boy"; on Hiroshima in World War II. Also at Wright-Patterson is the ACTUAL Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, which dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fat boy/Fatboy/Fat Man, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The world's first operational jet fighter was the Messerschmitt, Me 262. Its engine, the Junkers Jumo 004 Turbojet, began in 1937. Also shown is the huge B-52D Stratofortress. Many experimental airplanes can be viewed at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. They can be seen flying over the base, on the runways, and in the Air and Space Museum, including the: YF-22, Flying Tiger, AVF-117 Stealth Fighter Nighthawk B-29 Superfortress Nagasaki Japan B-52D Stratofortress Laser Gilded Bomb Baghdad B-29 bomb Nagasaki "fat boy" F 117 Stealth Bomber B-2 Tacit Blue, possible Laser Airplane, X-13 Vertijet, Fa989, AC-130A Hercules, YF-F fighter jet, YF-5A, X-3, Martin X-24B and U-2

IRAQ WAR MEMORIAL-AN ARTISTS' VISION

04:35
An artist has a vision of a memorial she is shown to create in a dream. This will honor the Lima Company of Ohio, in which many died in the war. She is painting the individuals. She is one of the people who inhabit one of the old log cabins on the Purdue place. This video was taken while doing research about John Purdue, founder of Purdue University. It shows one of the log cabins near the place where the Purdue family lived in the early 1800s. John Purdue might have stayed in it. The cabin is in its original location northeast of Columbus, Ohio. It is approximately 16x22. The Purdue family, of 9 sisters and John, grew up in a one-story log cabin similar to this one in Pennsylvania. A new book, Uncle: My Journey With John Purdue, tells the story of the mysterious man from a desperately poor, illiterate "mountain hollows," whose legacy includes the many schools he donated to. This book is also the story of a family's search for its roots as Purdue's great-great-grandniece describes her travels to the diverse places where Purdue had lived in order to learn about the mysterious relative known in her family Uncle.

HURRICANE ERIN BLASTS OHIO THUNDER, LIGHTENING, SAILBOATS 07.08.

03:53
Hurricane/Tropical Storm Erin over Ohio, showing thunder, lightening, mammatus clouds, sailboats, seagulls, bats, geese. Taken around 8-9:30 pm on 07.08.22. Near the center of the first formation shown are cumulous mammatus clouds, which can be associated with tornados. Later someone in the next county sighted a tornado and the Licking County sirens went off according to the 11:00 NBC news. Hurricanes are destructive not only on the coast, their remnants (as shown here) cause much interior damage. In Ohio, as much as 1 foot of rain fell within a few hours in some areas. Severe flooding inundated several places. Several counties were declared disaster areas. A funnel cloud was reported over the Alum Creek Lake three days after this (while still in the weather pattern) and emergency procedures were activated: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WLV5XWdP7PE Note in the last portion of the video, that before many of the lightening strikes, the clouds could be seen dancing (especially the portion in the center of the cloud formation). Sometimes they became a little brighter. Then there would be a lightening strike. John Purdue purchased a farm for his sister in this area. At that time, it was a woods with a small trail. Since 1973, it has been the Alum Creek Recreation area.

Hazardous bridge could collapse

02:52
The tragic collapse of the bridge in Minnesota is only the tip of the iceberg, when it comes to the aging US infrastructure. The West Orange Road Bridge in Delaware County, Ohio, is an example of a calamity about to happen. It is listed among the nation’s top at risk historic bridges. It is also rated as “structurally deficient” in Ohio and labeled in “critical shape” after a yearly inspection. It is also dangerous because it is a one-lane bridge in an area of high traffic (connecting heavily traveled Rts. 23 and 315) and rapid development. The historic and beautiful bridge, on the National Register of Historic Places, over the Olentangy River, was built in 1898 by the Toledo Bridge Company. Its west end abutments are the original sandstone. It retains a remarkable amount of historic integrity, which includes the original floor beams, lattice railings, and the builder and commissioner plaques. It is a nine-panel structure with a deck consisting of timber with a bituminous surface. The bridge is 182 feet long and 16 feet wide. It is uncommon to find such a traditional late 19th century pin-connected Pratt truss at this length. It is located on the Olentangy Scenic River on Orange Road in the Olentangy Heritage Corridor (Ohio Scenic Byway) in southern Delaware County in an area where the rural world intersects the urban Columbus, Ohio, area in a very upscale region. The Olentangy River here teems with wildlife–screeching red-tail hawks, crow, deer, and riparian vegetation including huge old trees. On the hills overlooking the valley is some of the most upscale housing in the region. Some of these estates have private landing strips, lakes, and further south along the river, private boat docks. Additional information about the bridge can be found at: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:Ewoxi8XLUd4J:www.ohiohistory.org/resource/histpres/docs/organgeroadbridge.pdf+%22orange+road%22+bridge+%22Delaware+County,+Ohio%22+olentangy+limestone&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us In 1865, John Purdue bought a farm for his sister along Orange Road. The monument commemorating the Battle of Point Pleasant and its associated treaty is located just north of Adelphi, Ohio, where Purdue once lived.

John Purdue birthplace Germany Valley PA

01:58
A better view of this same video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=johnPurdueSite&search=. Two Purdue family descendants interview a historian in Germany Valley by the place where the Purdue log cabin, in which John Purdue was reared, is thought to have stood. The video begins with a shot of a cannon “protecting” a graveyard overlooking the Juniata River a Shenandoah tributary. It shows what is believed to be the site of the Purdue log cabin in Germany Valley. This site is on the western slope of Blacklog Mountain. The video shows general information about the Purdue family. Although Purdue University is widely recognized, very little was known about John Purdue. This book, "Uncle: My Journey with John Purdue" to be published this fall will tell much more about him.
