Arin Crumley - I bought a GH1 Today

Search vimeo.com for "GH1" and you'll find great samples of this amazing camera. Here is my new philosophy, DV & HDV are for filmming weddings, an SLR camera is an artists tool, if DSLR cameras can now shoot beautiful HD video then it's time for all filmmakers to sell off their shitty tape based super heavy cameras and go for these new inventions that get you all the resolution and control you need to capture great images. Pannasonic is not paying me to say this, yet, I do hope they can help market the film once it's done. We'll be part of a slew of films to be first to be shot on the GH1. For thos wondering, the audio can be the H4n which gives you time stamps. Anyway, get involved in our creative process with our kickstarter page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/972012474/filming-at-burning-man-2009 Distributed by Tubemogul.

Shooting at Burning Man 2009 - Production Blog

10:42
So today a lot shuffled around but the team is now locked. I'm heading out into the desert to shoot with Roger Ingraham, Tarynn Weihahn, Susan Buice & Josh Steinbauer and AJ Abucay will be my second camera operator. I'll write more about what the story and concept is later, but for now, here is a video that lets you into the head space I'm in preparing for this ambitious next 3 weeks. And if you want to participate in the project by either providing a financial contribution to help us get more lighting gear or help out in some other way, you can do that through our projects kickstarter page. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/972012474/filming-at-burning-man-2009/ Distributed by Tubemogul.

Radar Party

02:35
After Alex Johnson and Lance Weiler worked their asses off for 6 months they've now completed 12 episodes that have gone live on Babble Gum. The episodes document innovative artists in snazzy 3 minute powerful mini documentaries. The basic concept is this series can be your Radar for up and coming neat stuff you otherwise would hear about until months and months later after it blows up. Through out the process I've been helping out a little behind the scenes with a little extra camera work, projections, searching for documentary subjects and generally keep everyone from going too insane in the pretty insanely ambitious effort. The result is a very neat series and a newly announced commitment from Babble Gum for another order of 24 more episodes! Check out the series at: http://radar.workbookproject.com Some photos I took at the party are here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=121234&id=507418218&l=e675e4eb53 Distributed by Tubemogul.

Meeting KS12 in Berlin

05:09
Tomorrow (today) I speak at BTK in Berlin about the future of filmmaking and what my Berliner host Gabriel is calling Hypercubism. He also has a clever name for editing video which he calls tesseracting. So I think it's appropriate to have cut together close to real time my journey from New York City to Berlin mainly to trip them out and to also get a chance to post some visuals that have been on my mind for a while but that I haven't been able to express in any appropriate way yet. If you or someone you know is in New York, send them along to these screening links to check out one of two Four Eyed Monsters Screenings: BTK http://www.btk-fh.de/index.php?id=46&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=123&tx_ttnews[backPid]=7&cHash=dd66e53388 Cineramarock http://www.cineramarock.de/page11.html MORE LINKS: http://www.ks12.net/ http://www.gabrielshalom.com/ http://pavako.com/ TECHNICAL NOTES: This video was shot on a Cannon TX1. Once I arrived in Berlin I put the SD card into the computer and used 'a better finder rename' to rename the files so they looked like this: 2009-05-25-055944-ARIN-TX1-TRIP-TO-BERLIN.AVI Then I dragged all of those files into Final Cut Pro with them still on the SD card because I was in a hurry and the 16 Gig sd card was full so I didn't want to back them up to the 1 terabyte drive I have with me on the trip. Then I made a timeline in FCP with the preset of apple pro res 720 by 1280. I then changed manual the timebase from 29.97 to 30 on a drop down in the sequence settings. This is because all of the TX1 footage is 30p and I didn't want to run cinema tools to change it to 29.97. Then I changed the the sequence play back settings from "safe" to "RT" so that I didn't need to render my AVI files. THey played perfectly real time on my 2.16 core duo Mac Pro that has 2 gigs of ram. I could even add color correction but then the cross dissolves didn't play back completely real time but instead looked like I was getting 10 fps. I then made a aiff of the song 'Nude' by Radio Head from the album in Rainbows that I bought directly from inrainbows.com which is no longer available as a download but that you can get on iTunes or Amazon. I didn't actually get permission from Radio Head so there is a chance that some video sites might not accept this video. However, I did credit the song right when it begins to play and my hope is that it's considered promotion for the song and basically fair use because it's only part of the song and my video doesn't replace the need for someone to get the song but instead encourages the need for someone to get the song because it's an amazing song. I don't know if this argument wouldn't hold up in court for a feature film but I do think it could hold up for a short video blog of this nature in which I'm not to worried if a few sites end up not wanting to host the video and kicking it back. I spent 3 hours editing, just playing around really. Some of the time was spent color correcting in which I ...

How do you do what you do? - London Power to the Pixel 2008

21:20
How do we do anything in life? How do we walk? How do we digest food? How the hell did we develop language and story telling? The answer? I don't have a clue. All I can tell is that we look around us at the objects and landscape and other creatures before us and we take a step into it all. Then another step, and then another step. And pretty soon, we are surviving as a product of our environment and doing so with out even much thought. Each next step is just the impulsive step we want to take. This has been my experience in the film industry. Everything changes when you least expect it and suddenly there are a new set of objects, landscapes and creatures. All I can do is try to stay in touch with what is before me, and take the step my involuntary impulses tell me that I should take. This video is my (Arin Crumley) presentation at power to the pixel back in Oct of 2008 and gives you a pretty good snapshot of the steps I've recently been taking. Can't we all just get a long?

1:03:20
FIlmmakers and digital exhibitors both need each other. They both expect a lot out of each other. Sometimes it hasn't been communicated what the expectations are. Sometimes it's good in relationships to just step back and spell out the needs. What are the exhibitors needs? What are the filmmakers needs? In this video a panel of new media digital exhibitors are asked that question and a room full of filmmakers then tell the exhibitors what their needs are. With that dialog out of the way we begin to design an ideal reality together. A future of universal meta data, transparent stats, healthy compensation and a frictionless discovery experience for the audience. So now with the beautiful plan designed the only way we're going to get there is if we work together. Guys, don't forget that it's okay that we need each other. It might be called DIY, but we don't mean literally. Christ! We have to undo some of our american engrained independence sometimes and just bond, join forces, become a greater sum then our parts and together we can move mountains. APPEARANCES IN THIS VIDEO BY: Scilla Andreen (indieFlix) Alex Afterman (Formerly at Heretic Films), Sara Pollack (youTube), Tom Hicks (Caachi), Saskia Wilson-Brown (Current TV), Mark Rotblat (TubeMogul) - Discussion Leader: Arin Crumley Please visit and subscribe to: http://diydays.com http://arincrumley.com http://fromheretoawesome.com http://workbookproject.com Thanks to all the sponsors and partners including: http://current.tv Distributed by Tubemogul.

The Whip - Performing at Bower Ball Room - RAW clip

00:57
Here is a little raw clip of the band that my friends Isis and Titus are tour managing. This band made me feel happy. Immediately. I walked in, saw the drummer rocking out, heard the catchy synths and got right into it. It's not the most original and unique music in the world, but thats not the point. Thats the amazing thing about music in my opinion. And film too for that matter. You just do it. You hit the base notes and you heat the beats and maybe you say something into a microphone and thats music. Boom. Done. Similar to film, something happens, http://Arincrumley.com Distributed by Tubemogul.

Hurricane Ike Sucked

01:47
Coming back from Burning Man and re-introducing myself to society has been hard. Kind of depressing. The real world is so slow. Connections formed on the playa don't have permission to grow anymore. Watching Hurricane Ike on the plane pretty much summed it all up. It's the end of the world. Or at least it feels like it. Maybe this slow life will eventually catch up with the acceleration I experienced out there. How long is that going to take? Help me here, what do you guys think? http://arincrumley.com/ http://asthedustsettles.com/

arin crumley as the dust settles production 08_22_08

02:00
Oh my jesus! We are leaving in the morning to drive 10 hours to the desert and start this film! It was all too much earlier today and I did this video just after I started to feel a weird cough coming up in my chest and took a break. I think I avoided getting sick by taking a break. I'll have to remember that out there. Okay, off to finish packing, get everyone situated with their cameras and then to get some sleep. http://arincrumley.com http://asthedustsettles.com

Talking about Episodic Cliff Hangers at Drexel University

12:25
At Drexel University in Philidelphia on Monday I showed a clip of Episode 12. After that I spoke a bit about the spontaneous filmmaking by always having a camera with you in case you want to document something. Then I talk about episodic cliff hangers and how those worked out with episodes 9 to 13. I trimmed it out but Jason also brings up the fact that dickens released his first few novels serialized in the paper. Then he talks about the fact that a lot of bad things come out but that filtering provides a promise for the future. Then Jonathan asks us what did to raise revenue with Four Eyed Monsters. I explained what we've done but also explained that in the future where everybody is a filmmaker that obviously not every individual needs to get paid. But for those that want their lively hood to come from filmmaking I talked about the youtube.com/partner sign up to join their revenue share program. Then I talk about how discovery of films needs to improve. Then the tape runs out and after that Brian announced a new project they are doing called Nokia Productions. Keep an eye out for more information coming to the web on that one soon.
