Son of the Sun
Management / Booking: mike.samm@gmail.com
Niagara Falls may be one of the 7 wonders-of-the-world but it is also a dreary, malnourished hamlet trailing behind its former glory, paddling feverishly to stay afloat. From this seemingly dark landscape though, comes a thing of desperate beauty. Lonely and lost and longing, but wide-eyed and hungry, Son of the Sun weave sumptuous pieces of musical calm.
Working between two cities, a true opposite ends of the spectrum set-up, the unsure land of Niagara Falls and all that is Los Angeles, the two members of Son of the Sun have managed to craft a 7 inch's worth of music so soulful you can barely call it pop. Joseph Stocker and Zak Ward both combine and ignore their vast musical backgrounds in rock, soul, hip-hop and indie-pop to create a thing of muted grandeur.
Ward's lyrics tied with Stocker's music and production create a breed of music so sweet to the ear, so supple, that the record will turn itself over and over. You feel longing and shards of desperation but ultimately you come out clean and full of hope. With a taste for the lush, they pile on keyboards and delay-washed guitars, surrounding the vocals, managing to conjure a mood, a time, a place. It may be a different mood, time, or place for each person, but there is no doubt that you will be transported somewhere both nostalgic and surreal once you fully ingest both sides of this sweet little 7 inch gem. This is music sparse in all the right places, and layered with honey everywhere else.
