For its exceptional support of its employees in the National Guard and Reserve, Chrysler received the 2008 Pro Patria Award. The award, which translated from Latin means "for the country," is presented to one employer in each state each year that adopts personnel policies that allow employees to actively participate in the National Guard and Reserve. It is the highest state-level award given to a civilian employer by the Department of Defense (specifically, the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve). Chrysler CEO, Robert Nardelli, says when his employees are activated, the other employees fill the gap; but keeping the positions for his 46 workers is something he takes seriously. "We don't see it as an expense. We see it as an investment—we see it as an investment in freedom. Second, people say isn't that a big burden? Well, here at Chrysler, we see it as a responsibility."
