Derek W Beck - Experimental Film in Editing (Audio Stripped)

An experimental film in editing. The idea was to test the limits of fast-paced editing: it is said that you need at least 4 frames to recognize an edit or new scene...this experiment edits more often that every 4 frames by the end of the experiment. My fifth student film, this was another no-notice opportunity to spend the rest of our time (we got done early one day!) shooting some film. So I decided to experiment with fast editing. A New York Film Academy student film. 16mm B&W (Reversal), Audio Stripped for copyright reasons, cut on Final Cut Pro. Filmed July 23, 2003. Shot on the back lot of Universal Studios, Hollywood, CA. 1:08

Loneliness (Audio Stripped)

02:44
A girl is reminded she is lonely and single. My fourth student film, it involves my second attempt at a special effect, but it didn't really work. It became clear to me how to pull off this effect "after" I had begun editing... The story suffered as I was concentrating on making the special effect happen. You''ll have to look hard to find that effect: the dissolving "crowd" behind the girl. A New York Film Academy student film. 16mm Color (Reversal), Audio Stripped for copyright reasons, cut on Final Cut Pro. Filmed July 19, 2003. Shot just outside of Griffith Park at the Gene Autry Museum, Hollywood, CA. 2:44

Just One Chance

01:14
A young man meets a beautiful girl in the elevator. My second student film, and the first where I was given time to come up with an idea. If you would've seen us shooting...we had to keep the elevator doors propped open, while the alarm was buzzing, do a shot, then let the elevator go, because it was actually being used and we weren't really supposed to be shooting there... A New York Film Academy student film. 16mm B&W (Reversal), No Audio, cut manually using a Steenbeck. Filmed July 5, 2003. Shot on the back lot of Universal Studios, Hollywood, CA. 1:14

Goodbye

03:14
A couple sadly says goodbye, aware that this is the end of their relationship. My third student film, and probably the best of my student films in terms of story. It includes my first real use of my dolly design, which was when I figured out it had a few flaws and needed to be tweaked. Also my first attempt at a genuine special effect. A New York Film Academy student film. 16mm B&W (Reversal), No Audio, cut on Final Cut Pro. Filmed July 12, 2003. Shot in Griffith Park, Hollywood, CA. 3:14

The Alley

01:19
A young woman is stalked by a strange man. My first student film and my first use of genuine motion picture film, though I had previous experience with video. A no-notice production where I was told that day I'd be making this movie. A New York Film Academy student film. 16mm B&W (Reversal), No Audio, cut on Final Cut Pro. Filmed July 2, 2003. Shot on the back lot of Universal Studios, Hollywood. 1:19
