Despite what you might think, the results of the 2006 election do not show us that our concerns about the integrity of the 2000 and 2004 elections were unwarranted. Nor should they allow us to assume that the 2008 election will be run fairly and honestly. Just the opposite. Watch what could happen to Obama this November.
Paperless electronic voting machines are sometimes referred to as a "black box," but a "black hole" would be more like it. Like a black hole, once the true intention of your vote goes in, there is no way for it to escape - no paper confirmation, no audit system, and no way to identify a problem and fix it. But unlike a real black hole, and the hokey pokey for that matter - electronic voting machines are so not cool.

Rather than pay attention to the many emails and tips about election day irregularities and exit poll discrepancies they received after the 2004 election, corporate media reporters and journalists collectively rolled their eyes or stuck their fingers in their ears and said, "La la la la la I'm not listening!" But a rare exception was Tribune Media Services syndicated columnist, Bob Koehler, who was one of the first to report nationally on the glaring problem, got the story out and now we can be prepared for what lies ahead in 2008.

On Election Day 2004, the inner cities were the target of massive and systematic voter disenfranchisement - long lines and other artificial barriers were manufactured to make it as difficult as possible for American citizens in these areas to exercise their legal right to vote. Why should anyone have to stay in line for 12 hours to vote? And with our busy lives and overwhelming responsibilities, is it even possibly to do so? Or is that the idea?

Emory County, Utah's County Clerk, Bruce Funk, is the kind of man you wish was your grandfather - soft-spoken, kind, and able to recognize what has been called "the nuclear bomb of security flaws" in Diebold's electronic voting machines. Unfortunately, no one had Bruce Funk's back and even though he blew the whistle and saved the 2006 election from a complete meltdown down, he was still removed from his elected post. Bruce Funk has every right to be a bitter man but instead he still can't think of anything more important to do with his life than save our democracy. See? Just like your grandfather...

Clint Curtis knows that there are secret software programs that can be used to fix elections. How? Because he built one for the Florida-based company he worked for. This is the story of Clint Curtis doing the right thing and blowing the whistle on the number one threat to our democracy - electronic voting machines.

Athan Gibbs had a dream: Count every vote. Athan Gibbs had a standard: You should be able to verify your vote like you can verify how much money you have in the bank. Athan Gibbs had a question: Why, if you're an ATM manufacturer, would you make a machine that doesn't provide a paper trail and can't be audited? Athan Gibbs had an idea: Make a voting machine where the voter has an opportunity to verify that their vote has been received , recorded and counted. This is the story of Athan Gibbs' quintessential dream - and its tragic conclusion.

All he was doing was his job when Steve Heller found "smoking-gun proof" that an electronic voting machine manufacturer was breaking the law in California. This is one man's story of standing up for liberty, freedom, and democracy - and then getting his ass kicked for it.
Clip from UNCOUNTED: The New Math of American Elections, a documentary by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt, that takes a close look at an election system where millions of votes routinely go uncounted.
UNCOUNTED also shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 - and now looms as an unbridled threat to the 2008 election.
UNCOUNTED: The New Math of American Elections exposes the systemic problems that plague our nation's elections and thus disenfranchise voters - including Jim Crow-like voter suppression, voter intimidation, undervoting, and the privatization of our election process. The film also examines how the fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater election fraud in 2006 and now looms as an unbridled threat in 2008.
