Last year, NFL star Michael Vick made national headlines for his involvement in a large, very well organized dog fighting ring. As the legal process unfolded, Best Friends Animal Society made the case that the dogs were the victims, and they did not deserve to die like so many others have. The dogs arrived here at the Sanctuary in early 2008, and it has been clear from the start that these dogs did deserve a second chance. It is hoped that their story can help change perceptions of the dogs that come from fighting backgrounds.
Recently, 22 of the dogs from the Michael Vick dog fighting case made Best Friends Animal Sanctuary their new home. Taking care of them has been a full time job for a handful of the most experienced trainers and caregivers the Sanctuary has to offer. Staying with them through the night has been important for several reasons including helping them to adjust to their new environment.
Best Friends Videographer, Michael Delgado-Hand recently spent a "night with the pitties" and filed this Survivorman-esque video. Enjoy!
Best Friends and local animal groups in Virginia rescued these animals from a dilapidated puppy mill late in the night of Friday, October 12, and into dawn the next day. The puppy mill in question was operating under medieval conditions—kerosene lamps, no electricity, small confinement cages, and no running water. So Best Friends arranged a third party purchase of all the remaining dogs to ensure their protection from further abuse.
Hundreds of animals make their way through the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary every year. Many are immediately adoptable, but some need to special care to get them back into loving homes. This video profiles the animals we come to know, as the "Guardian Angels."
Best Friends is a sanctuary for hundreds of animals in southern Utah. National Geographic began filming for the show, "Dogtown" in 2007. Three episodes ran on the channel in January, they will replay again in March. Five new episodes will air this summer!
