Frank Moore writes about the "St Valentines Midnight Masquerade Debauch:" ... A Love Tunnel, A Cabaret, An Erotic Ball. It was the kind of happening you read about in books. It was put on by Kim Jordan and Dave Normal (about 5 years ago he brought me to L. A. to be a part of his rave, Magica Sexualis). When we got there at 7:30, about 50 artists were feverishly turning a two-floor old empty theater into a maze of rooms of different inter-active environments. The building had gone on for a week ... but it had gone down to the wire and they were scrambling ... young punky artists ... the wire had to be moved back an hour or so to get everything created. Under this creative chaos, there was order. The Circus of Mysteries was my first show. I was 19 when I produced it. Inspired by vaudville, I wished to realize a fantasy of a sort of haunted cabaret, a wistful world of half-tragic entertainers too myopically shmaltzy to recognize the beauty of their own twisted routines. I never aimed to achieve anything like a true circus, that was totally beyond my means, so it was really only a circus figuratively speaking, and so I envisioned it as a circus of the mysteries of the human spirit. <a href="http://normal-design.com/normalpages/theaterpages/circusofmystmain.html">(read more)</a>

Video Montage. 1998. This is kind of a companion piece or sequel to "Mother Earth", and it was made during the same short tenure at film school and made with the same clunky old linear editing system. If I recall correctly we were asked to make a one minute commercial, and so I chose to advertise "reincarnation" - a wonderful product - don't you think?

Video Montage. 1998. This video was made during my brief and doomed film school career. It was for an S-VHS editing course, and so the piece was made on the clunky old linear video editing system - without the benefit of a computer. The assignment was, if I recall correctly, to make a short music video using footage exclusively from one film. I chose "Mother Earth" by Memphis Slim for music, and took my images from "The Atomic Cafe'". With starting material that great you can't go wrong.

David Normal's, "The Bicycle Ride" is a fanciful depiction of Albert Hofmann's discovery of LSD. The animation is set to Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother Suite" and was debuted at the LSD Symposium in Basel, Switzerland in Honor of Dr. Hofmann's 100th birthday.
