THE ABJEEZ BRING THEIR SOCIALLY PROGRESSIVE AND WORLDY RHYTHMS TO THE U.S.
-- Break-out album “Hameh” (‘Everyone’) includes track from their Tribeca Film Festival short “Edeaa” --
Washington, D. C., March 27, 2007 – World-Pop signature group, The Abjeez, today announced their 2007 American Tour kicking off in Washington, D.C. on April 26, followed by performances in New York City and San Francisco, Abjeez will feature songs from their break-out album “Hameh” – including a track from the latest release, “Edeaa”, chosen by New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival as a finalist for the short film competition.
“Edeaa”, Persian for “pretentious”, is a reflection of Iranian traditions conflicting with modern day realities, and a society that is at the tipping point of a new age. Drawing parallels between the extremities within the Persian culture, the Abjeez give voice to a society at the brink of evolution and radical change.
The Abjeez -- Persian slang for “sisters” -- is led by Iranian-Swedish sisters Safoura and Melody Safavi. Born in Iran and raised in Sweden, and drawing inspiration from their families ancient Persian lineage, the sisters have put together a kaleidoscope ensemble that includes bassist Erland Hofgaard, flamenco guitarist Johan Moberg and drummer Robin Cochrane from Ostersund, Sweden, and percussionist Paulo Murga from Chile.
Already a draw name throughout Europe, The Abjeez make world music for the wired world: flamenco hot, reggae cool, and salsa sassy. From the easy bop of “Geryeye Mard” (The Tears of a Man) to the bossanova yearning of “Cheraa” (Why) or the lashing passion of “Eddeaa”, the Abjeez blend the rhythms of the world into one great braza – while at the same time, leveraging their freedom to give Iranian youth, particularly women, a voice to express their desires for democracy and freedom.
The Abjeez will be performing at D.C.’s Eyebar on April 26, at NYU’s Kimmel Center on April 28, with a final act on May 4 at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall.
