When veterans return home from months or years in combat, many struggle to reconnect with their families. Some Lions in Minnesota are working to change that by providing an innovative program. These Lions partnered with the Veterans Affairs Department in their state to establish Project New Hope, a free retreat for all combat veterans and their loved ones.

The state of Victoria in Australia is hot and dry. Residents from its capital city Melbourne, to its rural wine making areas have long understood the dangers of wildfires but in February 2009 their worst fears were realized. 60 mph winds, scorching 115 degree heat, and humidity levels around 6% ignited fires that left destruction over 1.1 million acres of land.
A resort town nestled in a beautiful wooded valley, the community of Marysville was all but destroyed in 26 minutes. A massive heat wave and ferocious wall of fire consumed more than 400 buildings, taking 39 lives, leaving those who survived with nothing.
Lions created a relief distribution center, anchored by two huge warehouses. here, volunteers, sort, collect, box and load donated goods. The Lions warehouse has become the epicenter of activity, and a place of hope.
Reaching remote Marysville has been difficult. Lions work non-stop, overcoming many obstacles to deliver collected goods and supplies the residents desperately need.
With support from Lions Clubs International Foundation and the Lions of Australia Foundation Lions are continuing to help families and assist in rebuilding these communities.
