Few Australians know the song 'Waltzing Matilda' is owned by an American company raking in thousands of dollars. The Australian writer Banjo Patterson would be turning in his grave....he only got 5 pounds for the song.
It’s all about intellectual property.....which is seldom intellectual.
Australian National Songwriting Contest winner John Harley Weston (originally from Scotland - the birthplace of Banjo Patterson's father) has recorded a version of the song that an Australian movie want to use. You can hear it on his myspace. Thing is the American publishing company want $10,000. So, in protest, John's written a new version of what the song may sound like after a few years of American ownership. All the Australianisms are gone. John says, 'This is a bit of a dig at U.S. publishing laws. I've got nothing against America - some of my best friends and musicians hail from there but come on, that's like owning the Sydney Opera House. Give back Matilda.
