The band was part hard-driving bluegrass, part vaudeville and all entertainment tonight at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike kept the full house laughing, singing along, clapping and shouting throughout the entire two-part set. When the first 45-minute set came to a close, the good news was that after a well-deserved break, the band would be back on stage for a second set. Not only was Becky Buller’s fiddle playing great tonight, but her sense of timing and what she contributed to each story or intro that goes along with the band’s songs was priceless. Her delivery of borderline slapstick gestures and interjection of humor kept everyone in the Music Hall waiting to see what was coming next! Intertwined with the vocal and guitar talents of Chad Graves, with Valerie dancing around them as they sang, the band’s show reminded me of old vaudeville. Their show is entertaining and clean and definitely family friendly. Teenagers, baby-boomers and older folks all seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. So just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, after the break, a band that happened to be traveling through and staying at the Spirit of the Suwannee, The Wilson Family Band, joined Valerie and her band onstage. This family group included an incredible young fiddle player, Katie Wilson, who is just 12 years old. She could have been 30 years old, if you just listened to her fiddle playing. She literally busted out with Mule Skinner Blues and had us eating out of her hand! I don’t remember how many times people just burst into clapping during that song. This girl could belt out a yodel! I was amazed to learn that she’d only been playing for a year. Jean and Bob Cornett, original co-founders of the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, were in the Park tonight for a family reunion. Bob and Jean are well known throughout the country’s bluegrass circles for promoting children’s musical education programs. Once this young lady started playing, from the corner of my eye I saw Bob get up from his chair and slowly edge around the crowd and find a place to lean up against. I saw that gleam in his eyes that is reserved for when Bob’s sees that unique “spark” in a child and their love of music. He was entranced throughout the song as this young girl just tore it up! It was my favorite moment of the night. There’s always music going on at the Spirit of the Suwannee. Inside, outside, on the deck, on a stage, by the river, at the campsites, in the woods, all over.
