autorickshaw - Autorickshaw: Maya

Autorickshaw live in concert, performing the song Maya, composed and arranged by Suba Sankaran. Maya is a four-movement, Indo-jazz fusion work written specifically for Autorickshaw (voice, percussion, tabla, bass) and string quartet, and was commissioned by the West End Cultural Centre. The four movements are entitled Illusion, Enchantment, Fantasy and Maya. This musical work is inspired by the Hindu goddess Maya. The literal meaning of the word Maya is illusion. Maya is the principal deity who creates, perpetuates and governs the fantasy and dream of duality in the Universe. In essence, it is the veiling power of illusion that creates ignorance in the individual consciousness. Purvi Tillana-T.S Bhagavatar

04:22
Tillana is from the dance tradition of south India. This one has dance and drum syllables and sanskrit text. The raga is 'vakra', meaning 'crooked'-the ascending and descending scales are different.

Saraswati

06:40
The video is a bit dark to start, but it gets much better! Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of music, learning and creativity. This song is the first track on our album Four Higher.

Ganamurthy - Thyagaraja

06:23
This is a south Indian classical composition by saint composer Thyagaraja. Fun fact: Thyagaraja supposedly composed upwards of 24,000 songs. About 1,000 survive today. That's a lot of songs.
