岡田有希子 1967-1986 SYNOPSIS : When I turn my eyes to the world, there are rarely people that know about the genre of Japanese idol (J-idol). The genre has unique atmosphere, off course the singers of the genre are demanded the techniques as a vocalist to some extend, but it was the important factor whether they have the charms like attract the fans, that is, cute looking, voice or behavior and so on. Even if there are foreigners who know about J-idol, you may not know except of the famous 80s idol like Seiko Matsuda or Akina Nakamori and so on. When Japanese music scene arrived to the middle of 80s the style of J-idol changed little by little, that is, the promoting style in general idol style was getting to be difficult, for instance, as I wrote already, the style that the singers showed cute behavior, and such general and old 80s idol style was called Seitou ha Aidol style in Japan. And while some of 80s J-idol singers faced to the wall of the difficulty on the promoting or sales, they was trying to search for the new solution by challenging to other music genres, changing their cute character to adult character. In the condition, Yukiko Okada has been called legendary pure (Seitouha) style Japanese 80& idol even now. There were many reasons that she was called such. As I wrote already, some of J-idol had some character and dared to change their original character for getting the fans, to be ideal idols, but the truth of the matter was that J-idols character was not truth. TV talents in many genres in addition to singers are demanded friendly and aggressive style, that will be said in many countries, but she Yukiko Okada、her character was very shy so that she rejected the cameras, but she continued to have the passion that she wanted to be more active as a top J-idol singer. On a day in 1986, she jumped to her death from high building. That was sudden and unexpectable death. It was not long after she got no-1 single in Japanese cd chart, and she smiled in TV or magazines just before the death. Now even, nobody knows about the reason of the suicide. But one thing that I can say is that she had naive and sensitive character so that committed to suicide. As I wrote, she had longed to be a cute idol like Seiko Matsuda, Naoko Kawai from her child age, and she had gotten to be the idol in 1984, but she may have been troubled with the life as a idol singer in fact, the gap between reality and ideal exist in many place, works, in even our life except of her. If the way for avoiding the sorrow outcome may have existed, for instance, retiring her working as the singer and so on. But she was serious, naive, and honest and had pure mind, so she could not do such select. It may be very difficult thing that the foreigners who do not know about even the genre of J-idol understand about her. But if you may be able to understand about the truth mean that she have been called "legendary and forever Seitouha idol". Rest in Peace Yukko Chan...
