Mag­no­lia's is tucked in­side a 1905 mill and its rus­tic past is a vis­i­ble as­set. Sim­ple clap­board sid­ing and ex­posed beams give the restau­rant a cozy am­biance, while the wheels and pul­leys, still sus­pend­ed in the ceil­ing, speak of its hard-​work­ing his­to­ry. This up­beat gre­gar­i­ous spot will win your heart and make you han­ker to re­turn time and time again.

Ex­ec­u­tive Chef Mark Mar­roc­co suc­cess­ful­ly mar­ried the ru­ral at­mo­sphere to a mod­ern sen­si­bil­i­ty. From his slick, open kitchen, he pro­duces a menu that is in­flu­enced both by his Ital­ian back­ground and by South­ern tra­di­tions. A dish of al­mond-​coat­ed warm Wis­con­sin goat cheese ac­com­pa­nies a sun­dried toma­to vinai­grette and frisee sal­ad, com­pli­ment­ed by a cros­ti­ni, ex­pert­ly grilled to dis­perse the warm, vel­vety cheese. The house fa­vorite is the lac­quered salmon, po­si­tioned over wasabi mashed pota­toes with a soy glaze, sesame seeds, and pick­led gin­ger. The sweet taste of the salmon blends with the spice of the wasabi and det­o­nates an ex­plo­sion of fla­vors.The hick­o­ry grill sec­tion of the menu is pure­ly de­li­cious. The Mediter­ranean shrimp and white ched­dar stone­ground grits is a dish wor­thy of a drive. The skew­ered shrimp are grilled to ex­act­ness, and the taste of hick­o­ry plays sub­tly in your mouth. The grits, a Vir­ginia del­i­ca­cy, are creamy in tex­ture and per­fect­ly fla­vored by the cheese.
