i heard on a show that in that car there was a dog, and the reason the guy was running back is because he tried to go save the dog, but he didnt reach him in time.. its true, it was on destroyed in seconds or something like that on the discovery channel. its sad really

At the time they built that bridge, they didn't know to take aerodynamics into account when designing bridges. the winds in the narrows was causing the bridge to act like a wing, then the deck would flex lift would be lost over over again. this bridge was nicknamed "Galluping Gertie" .
