Description:

Government inspectors say the largest hospital serving the San Fernando Valley has "serious deficiencies" and does not meet Medicare's standards for infection control. A report based on an inspection last fall could threaten the federal funding for Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. One patient during the inspection had a wound infection in her groin, and another had a drug-resistant bacteria in his urine, but the hospital employee assigned to deal with infections and communicable diseases didn't know the two patients were in the hospital. Hospital officials say they don't think the medical center has poor hygiene, and point out that they are rated as "above average' in dealing with infections on a state Web site.
