"Chicago Stands With Aung San Suu Kyi and For The Cause Of Burmese
Freedom"
For the Lady - Free Burma!
(Chicago: July 26, 2005) Burmese democracy activists in Chicago, IL
willjoin one of the city's biggest events on Saturday, July 30, the
Venetian Night Boat Parade on Lake Michigan. Four Burmese democracy
activists,Thein Moe, Ma Cherry, Mar Mar Linn, and Nay Min Tar will be
aboard a yacht named, "The Way," captained by Mr. Tom Gibbons. "The
Way" will be carrying the heart and spirit of the 50 million people of
Burma on Saturday night.
Chicago's Venetian Night boat parade will resonate with a sad moment
in Burma's recent history, what's known to many Burmese as the "Red
Bridge" Incident. Inya Lake's White Bridge was turned red by the
blood of non-violent student demonstrators in March 1988, when they
were cornered, beaten, raped, and drowned on the bridge and in the
waters of Inya Lake in Burma's capital, Rangoon, by the riot police.
The Burmese democracy activists will display images of freedom and of
Aung San Suu Kyi, affectionately called, 'The Lady,' and the world's
onlyimprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She is considered a living
emblem of freedom to the Burmese and many others in the world, on par
with Mahatma Gandhi of India and Nelson Mandela of South Africa.
Activists will demand the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all
political prisoners. Aung San Suu Kyi has spent the majority of the
past 16 years under house arrest by Burma's brutal military dictators
for her pro-democracy activities.
They hope to raise awareness of Burma's struggle and encourage Burma's
military regime, one of the world's worst human rights abusers, to
acknowledge the results of national democratic elections in 1990 in
which Aung San Suu Kyi's party, National League for Democracy (NLD),
won a landslide victory and to engage in a true and meaningful
dialogue with the NLD and the ethnic nationalities, for national
reconciliation and democratization in Burma.
