to sum up the situation so far: two TFI Friday guests had uttered the f-word live on air well before the watershed. the producers of the show had been subject to repeated warnings from the ITC. so what's the next logical step? why, invite Shaun Ryder back on to speak to chris and perform a cover version of the sex pistol's 'Pretty Vacant'. ah, but wait; it's not as stupid as it sounds. the pre-performance interview was taped earlier in the day to eliminate the possibility of any live rudery, and there are no rude words in the lyrics to 'pretty vacant', right guys? the incident had two repercussions - TFI went from a live show to a taped one, and the ITC made channel four add a special clause to it's programme compliance code stating that shaun ryder must never appear on a live show ever again.
